St. Vitus Treasure - newly opened permanent exhibition at Prague Castle

President Vaclav Klaus and Prague Archbishop Dominik Duka opened a new permanent exhibition of the St Vitus treasure, one of the largest cathedral treasures in Europe, at Prague Castle. The exhibition presents 139 reliquaries and liturgical objects of high historical and artistic value.

After many years, the Chapel of the Holy Cross in the 2nd courtyard of the Prague Castle will once again house a permanent exhibition featuring the Treasure of St. Vitus. The history of this Treasure which dates back to St Wenceslas (907-935), the patron saint of the Czech state, returned to the Holy Rood Chapel after 21 years. The treasure was displayed in the chapel in 1961-1990. Then the chapel was closed for years for security reasons and inconvenient conditions. It underwent a thorough reconstruction in the past three years.

The value of the treasure is not only historical - the artefacts and objects used during masses hold great liturgical value, in addition to the craftsmanship and quality of the precious stones and metals, which is priceless.

The collections include holy relics, chalices, monstrances and other liturgical items, as well as panel paintings and old textiles. One of the most valuable exhibits is a reliquary cross that Charles IV, King of Bohemia and Roman Emperor, had made in the 14th century.

The Czech king and Roman Emperor Charles IV was the most famous donor. In 1333, before he became the Czech king, he expanded the Treasure and later introduced it into public masses which enabled average citizens to regularly view some of the items in it.

The Exhibition was prepared by the Prague Castle Administration, the Office of the Czech President and the St. Wenceslas Metropolitan Chapter which will showcase the 139 reliquaries and liturgical items of priceless historical and artistic value.

The number of visitors to the Holy Rood Chapel to see the St Vitus treasure will be limited to 45 at a time. The entrance fee will be 300 crowns and a family ticket will cost 600 crowns.

Weihnachtsmärkte in Prag 26.11.2011 - 1.1.2012

Auch in der Tschechischen Republik gehören die Weihnachten zu den größten und beliebtesten Feiertagen im Jahr. Die Vorbereitungen beginnen mit der Adventszeit.

Die größten Weihnachtsbäume stehen traditionell auf dem Altstädter Ring und in der Prager Burg, wo während der ganzen Advents- und Weihnachtszeit Weihnachts- und Volkslieder von Laien, sowie auch professionellen Künstlern gesungen werden. Lassen Sie sich solche Konzerte nicht entgehen, weil sie eine unvergeßliche Atmosphäre haben.

Der Prager Weihnachtsmarkt auf dem Altstädter Ring und dem Wenzelplatz hat ab 26.11.2011 bis zum 1.1.2012 geöffnet. Jeden Tag ab 18 Uhr gibt es auf der Bühne am Altstädter Ring ein Kulturprogramm für Kinder und Erwachsene. Besonders romantisch ist der Altstädter Ring am Abend. Das weiß jeder, der Prag einmal besucht hat. Seit dem 26.November erstrahlt der weiträumige Platz mit den bunt verzierten Häuserfassaden um Teyn-Kirche und Jan-Hus-Denkmal noch heller als sonst.

Christbaumkugeln aus hauchdünnem Glas warten in den Holzbuden auf Käufer. Kleine weiße Porzellanengel mit goldenen Flügeln werden von Pragern und Touristen aus aller Welt neugierig beäugt und vorsichtig in die Hand genommen. Dazu zieht der Duft von gebrannten Mandeln und frischen Lebkuchen durch die engen Gänge zwischen den Verkaufsbuden. Glühwein und Bratwurst gibt´s natürlich auch. Dekorationen aus Glas und Holz, Kerzen und Wunderkerzen, Krippen, Adventskränze, Keramik, Weihnachtskarten, Spielzeug, Süßigkeiten, Mistel sowie auch Weihnachtsgebäck aus dem mährischen Vizovice u.a. Auch traditionelle volkstümliche Handwerke werden hier demonstriert.

Die größten Weihnachtsmärkte in Prag, die bereits traditionell auf dem Altstädter Ring und dem Wenzelsplatz stattfinden, werden in diesem Jahr laenger dauern. Sie werden dem 26. November 2011, beginnen und dem 1.Januar 2012 enden.

Neuheiten dieses Jahres

Die Gäste der Weihnachtsmärkte im Zentrum von Prag werden auf den ersten Blick vom ganz neuen Aussehen der Stände überrascht werden. Diese werden so angeordnet, dass die Durchgangsmöglichkeiten über den Platz verbessert und die Orientierung im gesamten Raum erleichtert wird. Die Besucher der diesjährigen Märkte können eine feierliche dekorative Schmückung der Bäume und Marktplätze auf beiden Plätzen erwarten. Bunter wird auch die Auswahl an
Erfrischungen und Imbissen sein, wo man Spezialitäten aus unterschiedlichen Regionen der Republik wird kosten können.

"Für die diesjährigen Weihnachtsmärkte ließen wir uns stark durch eine Erhebung inspirieren, die wir im Verlauf des vergangenen Jahres durchführten und an der Hunderte von angesprochenen Gästen in beiden weihnachtlichen Lokalitäten in Prag und auch an weiteren Orten der Tschechischen Republik teilnahmen.

Märkte im Zeichen altböhmischer Traditionen

Die diesjährigen Weihnachtsmärkte im Zentrum Prags werden wiederum den Charakter einer typischen volkstümlichen Weihnacht haben.
Die Besucher begegnen hier tschechischen Traditionen, tschechischen Ensembles und tschechischen Produkten. Auf den Märkten werden ausschließlich weihnachtliche Erzeugnisse, wie z.B. Weihnachtsschmuck, Kerzenständer, Mistelzweige, Kränze oder Kerzen, verkauft.


Auf dem Podium gibt es vor allem Konzerte von Kinderensembles. Am Heiligabend kommen Traditionsfreunde selbstverständlich nicht um die Weihnachtsmesse von Jakub Jan Ryba. Fehlen werden auch nicht die traditionelle Verkostung von Fischsuppe, Silvesterfeiern oder das Projekt "Brücken zwischen Städten", das bereits eine zehnjährige Tradition hat und durch das wir Weihnachtsmärkte in den Partnerstädten Prags besuchen.

Open Doors Day at Municipal House ( Obecni dum )

Here, on 28th October 1918, the National Committee ceremonially declared Czechoslovakian independence with a manifesto for the nation. It was a day that shaped Czech history. The Municipal House is justifiably proud of its past and celebrates the National Holiday with an Open Day.

This year, on anniversary of the establishment of the Republic, the Municipal House once again opens its prestigious premises to the general public. Prague residents and visitors to the Capital therefore have an opportunity to view the unique Art Nouveau interior of this National Cultural Monument. The tour of the building will take in all the exquisite halls on the 1st floor: through Smetana Hall, Patisserie, Moravian Slovak Salon, Božena Němcová Salon, Oriental Salon, Grégr Hall, and Palacký Hall to Mayor’s Hall, the artistic decoration of which was the highly esteemed work of world-famous Alfons Mucha.
Other artists who contributed to the decoration of the Municipal House include painters Mikoláš Aleš, Jan Preisler, Max Švabinský, František Ženíšek, sculptors Josef Václav Myslbek and Ladislav Šaloun. The exquisite interior of the Municipal House will be open to the public on 28th October from 9am to 3pm.

The one and only exhibition officially approved by ABBA!

The glamour and glitz tour of ABBAWORLD, the spectacular multimedia exhibition show, continues. After London, Melbourne, Sydney and Györ in Hungary, the next stop on the calendar is Prague. The members of ABBA are happy to see ABBAWORLD arrive in the blooming capital of the Czech Republic in springtime.

”ABBAWORLD is going places where we never had a chance to play when we were still active as a group and that’s great!” says Bjorn. “We wish all visitors a happy experience.”

The exhibition, which will premiere on 6 May 2011 at Slovansky Dum in the centre of the Czech capital, is presented by Sony Music Prague, in cooperation with Viva Art Music.

”We are looking forward to this exhibition with great excitement,” says Zbynek Knobloch, managing director of Sony Music Entertainment Czech Republic. ”This is an exhibition that allows the visitors to engage and interact in ways that we never thought possible a few years ago.”

Magnus Danielsson, President of Touring Exhibitions, the production company of ABBAWORLD, has followed the tour over the world.

Exhibition Beatlemania - untill 10.1.2011

Good news for Beatles fans – a new exhibition at the Czech Museum of Music opens, featuring the music and the men – the museum’s even borrowed George Harrison’s banjo, one of John Lennon’s shoes, and lots more Beatles memorabilia.

The exhibition’s highly interactive however - there’s even a little recording studio where you can try belting out Beatles songs.

The exhibition will include original Madame Tussaud waxworks. The exhibition in Prague will recognize the influence The Beatles in general, and John Lennon in particular, had on the Czech nation and it’s youth culture.

Lennon’s 1968 songs Revolution, became the underground symbol of Prague’s youth culture in their peaceful revolt against the Communist state. Despite any impression given by their 1968 song "Back in the U.S.S.R.," the Beatles never made it behind the Iron Curtain in the 1960s, but that doesn't mean they didn't influence Czech youth of that, and successive, generations.

"Under communism, young people were really attracted to Western culture, to everything that was coming from the other side of the Iron Curtain," said Veronika Seidlová, co-curator of the forthcoming "Beatlemania!" exhibition at the Czech Museum of Music. "The Beatles were an icon of this fascination with the West."

The exhibition launches June 4 and runs through early next year. It gathers Fab Four memorabilia and tracks the band's general history along with focusing on the influence the band, and its members, have had in the Czech Republic.

"Our aim with this exhibition is to try to get close to the people who want to remember those times," Seidlová said. "Men and women who were young then, wearing long hair and were kind of persecuted by the older generations."

After the 1980 murder of John Lennon, a spontaneous tribute to the musician began in Prague, where people started writing and painting on a Malá Strana wall. It eventually became a symbol of protest against the communist regime. The wall remains and is known as the Lennon Wall, located just around the corner from the museum.

"John Lennon is still an icon of peace, and the Beatles' music gave people the confidence and desire to express their own emotions and desire for peace," said Clare Ireland, general manager of The Beatles Story, a museum based in Liverpool that collaborated with the Czech Museum of Music on the exhibition.

The displays, of course, also go beyond the band's influence in the Czech Republic and track their evolution more generally.

Lifesize wax statues of the band originally from a Madame Tussaud's exhibition will be on display. The Beatles were measured for the statues in March 1964, in the midst of filming A Hard Day's Night. "To add to their authenticity, the waxworks wear suits designed and tailored by Dougie Millings, who was their favorite tailor at the time," Ireland said. The statues are insured for 250.000, making them the most valuable objects in the exhibition. Also on hand is an original gold-plated banjolele (half-banjo, half-ukulele) formerly owned by George Harrison.

"It's difficult to place a value on Beatles memorabilia, as it's all an important part of history," Ireland said.

Seidlová also says the exhibition will track the breakup of the band and the post-1970 solo careers of John, Paul, George and Ringo. She says the controversial components of the band's breakup - like Yoko Ono - are included.

into existence and it is our home today, old but still very much alive, constantly metamorphosing, bearing the only known life in the universe. What was its birth like? What does the planet look like inside? How did life happen to evolve in such immense diversity? ... Just a few of the many questions our exhibition helps answer.

Through unique specimens, models and a selection of what we call “toys” you can investigate the Earth in a different way than your everyday experience, books or movies. Let us escort you through a volcano experiencing an earthquake, around a Devonian tropical reef or through a Carboniferous forest. You can also meet a skeleton of the giant dinosaur Amargasaurus or the well known Australopithecus “Lucy”. Come and explore the story of Earth from its very beginning through the present human age. When leaving the show-rooms, we hope you will take with you an even greater appreciation of the Earth than before.

Auf dem Altstädterring wird ein Podium aufgestellt sein, auf dem verschiedene kulturelle Darbietungen zu sehen sein werden. Unter anderem werden hier Folkore-Ensembles aus ganz Tschechien auftreten. Und auf dem Wenzelsplatz wird man die Herstellung und verschiedene traditionelle Dekorationstechniken von Osterruten, die sich von Region zu Region unterscheiden, vorführen.

Exhibition of The National museum
An exhibition introducing the mysterious world of caves and the efforts of Czech speleologists in discovering it.

The Macocha Abyss, the Punkva Caves or the Koněpruské Caves – those are names known to a vast majority of you and popular destinations of school and family trips of all generations, as well as attractions for foreign visitors. This is the general idea coming to people ´s minds when the word “cave” is mentioned.

But there are few people who know that in addition to the caves open to the public there are more than 3,000 other caves and abysses in Czech Republic.

And hardly anybody even suspects that every weekend hundreds of volunteers investigate these caves, document them and try to find the way to their still unknown and unexplored sections.

The exhibition – “Come along to the cave – tries to present to the wide general public the attractive world of the inaccessible caves and the ways of their discovery. In this way it aims at showing the efforts of Czech speleologists, the methods and results of their work, especially in the recent three decades, not only in the Czech Republic but also abroad, where many dozen kilometres of new, often unique underground spaces have been discovered.

The exhibition is held on the occasion of 40th anniversary of the discovery of the largest cave of the Czech Republic – the Amateur Cave – and 30th anniversary of foundation of the Czech Speleological Society. At the same time the exhibition has been conceived as an associated event to the project entitled “The Story of the Planet Earth” prepared by the National Museum.

Disney On Ice - Micky & Minnie Groß in Fahrt

Die Disney On Ice-Produktion "Micky & Minnie groß in Fahrt" nimmt die Zuschauer mit auf eine fantasievolle Action-Reise zu vier aufregenden Schauplätzen, an denen sie alle beliebten Disney-Freunde wieder treffen. Die Zuschauer werden direkt von ihren Sitzen in die zauberhaften Welten von Disneys "Lilo & Stitch", "Arielle, die Meerjungfrau", "Der König der Löwen" und "Peter Pan" geschickt. Die Arena ist erfüllt von Musik, Magie und präsentiert als Highlight Micky und Minnie, die den Zuschauer auf seiner spannungsgeladenen und abenteuerlichen Reise begleiten.

Bei jeder Szene tauchen die Kinder und Eltern in eine neue ungewöhnliche, aber interessante Welt ein, wie z.B. in das verträumte Stadtbild Londons oder die Farbenpracht einer tropischen Insel. Das Publikum erlebt neben den verrückten verlorenen Jungs in Peter Pan oder dem peppigen Hula-Tanz mit Lilo und ihren Freunden den unzähmbaren Stitch, verstellte Grimassen und aufregende Abenteuer von Timon und Pumbaa, sowie eine mit Reggae-Rhythmen gespickte Einlage von der Krabbe Sebastian in Disney's - Arielle, die Meerjungfrau.

Jeder einzelne Schauplatz präsentiert seine eigene Stimmung und Lichteffekte. Verantwortlich hierfür ist Patrick Dierson. Die neblige Londoner Skyline, die von dem Fenster der Darling-Kinder zu sehen ist, verwandelt sich rasch in den mysteriösen Wald, in dem Peter Pan und die verlorenen Jungs in ihrem Baumhaus leben, während Lilo und Stitch sich an sonnigen Surfufern herumtreiben, die von Sonnenlicht und tropischen Pflanzen umhüllt sind.

Die vielen unterschiedlichen Stimmungsbilder werden sowohl auf dem Eis, als auch außerhalb des Eises erstklassig in Szene gesetzt. Lilos Zuhause auf Hawaii wird beispielsweise auf dem Eis inszeniert, während der außerirdische Planet von Stitch über dem Eis dargestellt wird, was der Show eine gewisse Multidimensionalität verleiht. Käpt'n Hooks wilde Piratencrew segelt über das Eis auf einem riesigen Piratenschiff, das über 10 Meter lang und nahezu 6 Meter breit ist und die Töchter von König Triton schlüpfen für ihren Musikunterricht aus überdimensionalen Muscheln heraus. Die sehr beliebten Freunde Timon und Pumbaa präsentieren sich in einer fantasievoll nachgebildeten afrikanischen Savanne, welche zum Verweilen lädt.

Musikalisch präsentiert die Disney On Ice -Produktion Micky & Minnie gross in Fahrt eine Kombination alt bekannter Melodien aus Disney's Peter Pan, Arielle, die Meerjungfrau und Der König der Löwen, sowie den beliebten Songs aus Disney's Lilo & Stitch und einiger klassischer Rock'n'Roll-Songs, welche die ganze Familie erkennen wird.
